I don’t think I’ve consciously realized it until as of late, but one of my all-time favorite, go-to styles is the turtleneck. They first resurged a couple years ago, which means it’s pretty much safe to say they’re here to stay for another while.

By “another while,” I mean that the turtleneck is one of those throwback styles recycled from the 90’s, this time modernized with the addition of the mock neck (for a less formal and intense look). It’s great, because that makes it really convenient and cheap to get your hands on a variety of them. These are the gems you might be looking for in Goodwill— or better yet, the back of your mom's closet.

LOOK ONE

Gloves, Target; Turtleneck, Polo Ralph Lauren; Coat, Zara

We recently had a nice little snowstorm out on the upper east coast, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to put together a couple of outdoor winter looks. I love the way turtlenecks look with collarless coats— each accentuates the other.

I recently got new glasses as well, and I think they really complete the whole subtle 90’s vibe.

For my hair, I pulled it back into a low bun, save for the bangs effect, to streamline the look. Turtlenecks immediately create the potential for a clean, elegant look, which is direction of style I hope to be headed in these days.

LOOK TWO

Turtleneck, Thrifted; Coat, J-Crew; Boots, Aldo

Clearly, the colorblocking of this second outfit steals the show. I’m in love with this bright red coat, and it looks uber cool and sleek against the rigidity of the black turtleneck. Talk about timeless: this turtleneck is a decades-old hand-me-down from my aunt that was surely heading for local donations before it caught my eye.

Turtlenecks are so easy to create cute ‘fits from, as they themselves already create a bit of a statement. In both looks, I kept the black pants and high-heeled ankle boots to keep things simple but sharp.

There are endless ways to wear turtlenecks, and certainly endless styles out there in the market. I’ve just barely skimmed the surface with these two coat-based looks. But I suppose I could revisit turtlenecks in the future with some more variety, since they are and will always be, in a word, classic.
